Water Pollutants Can Be Detected By Bioelectronic Nose


The latest water technology is going to use the human nose as a stimulus. Researchers have developed the new method to monitor the quality of the water and this new method is going to work through a bioelectronic nose. This bioelectronic nose copies the function of a human nose.

Through this new technology, water is smelled and the bacteria can be traced that are residing in it. The technology is believed to be a success in which no heavy testing or equipment is required.

Bioelectronic nose possess more benefits than the instruments which are already there for the monitoring of the water quality. The sensor can be used with ease and the detection of the pollutants that are very tiny in size in the water. The latest technology is said to be more sensitive as compared to the methods for the detection that already exist. According to the researchers from the Seoul National University, they can dig out more through this technology as it more valuable.

The findings of the research have been discussed by Tai Hyun Park and according to him, it is not necessary that if the smell of the water is bad, then it is toxic. He gave an example of the laundry when it does not smell good and you do not want to wear it, it would not make it toxic but rather it is just because of the bad smell. About the drinking water, you would do the same if it has a bad odor you will not drink it therefore, a method has been discovered which is going to detect the contaminants by smelling it and then remove it.


Traditional methods to test the quality of the water can be proved as very long procedures. If the presence of bacteria is to be detected in the water by the scientists, 2 things can be done by them. Either the sample will be taken to the lab where the bacteria is going to be grown in it and then the concentration is to be determined by counting the consequential colonies. Another choice with them is its analysis with the help of the high priced mass spectrometry or gas chromatography tools.

According to Park, the traditional methods are acceptable but it is also true that we need new methods as well to make the water industry grow. He further commented on the conventional methods of treatment that they are a useful source for the detection of smell but for these tests, the equipment used in the laboratory is very expensive and a lot of work is needed for that.

The latest technology can be used more in future as it is not only going to help in the detection of bacteria but also it will assist to detect some illicit drugs. The development of the products like wine, perfume and coffee is also possible.
