Storm Water Problems will Be Solved Through Green Infrastructure


Infrastructure of the city of Newark is being criticized as many cities have been facing the situation sewage laced storm water at the time of rain. New Jersey State officials are planning to induce the solution in shape of Green Infrastructure.

Policies are being made and funding matter are also being discussed so that the deployment of this new Green Infrastructure is ensured and for that purpose, identification of the opportunities is currently a prevailing act of the authorities.

The authorities of Newark have current concern with numerous jurisdictions including wastewater treatment plant present in the city that is a plan on which they have been working for a long period for the reduction of the occurrences of Combined Sewer Outflow in the river of Passaic. The plan is necessary to be implemented which is going to be in favor of public but the project is also a regulatory authority.

The issue is not limited to the Newark city but goes beyond that and there are around 700 cities in the country for which a combined system of sewerage is made and these cities are built in a way that they use this combined system. This sewer system has had the water come from toilet and shower all of which had to go down the drain and then the water had to be flown in one pipe that is in excess due the storms.


Usually the water is entirely transported through this pipe but when it is the time of rain, then the overflow of the sewage which is raw is found into the streets, rivers, basements and streams.

To overcome such situation, the project of green infrastructure is therefore the part of the planfor example the project includes bioswales and green roofs through which the water come from storm would be absorbed and saved from running off the streets. Philadelphia and New York have already executed this plan and are reported to be successful in the control of floods of minor level.

The issue for the officials is that it is an expensive project. A storm water planter and paver entrance would cost around $146,000. Inclusion of the rain barrels and the planter boxes to put a base would cost $77,000.

So, the conclusion can be drawn that the source of funds are required by the city authorities by which the labor would also be increased to implement the plan. Further, the agreements are needed to be made with the developers and laws of the state are required to be altered to which the funding for the GSI would be the part,
