Maybe Our Water Didn’t Come From Comets?
A 2014 study claims there is a hidden “ocean” trapped about 400 miles below North America. How much water are we talking about? Try three times more than all the water that exists on the Earth’s surface oceans!
That water, though, isn’t going anywhere, as it’s trapped between the planet’s upper and lower mantle. While some scientists believe the planet’s early water came from comets, this study may suggest that the Earth’s water came from deep below the surface.
The study also sheds some light on how subterranean water impacts plate tectonics, or the shifting of rock in the outer crust.
