Researches have been targeting a new drug in the wastewater and using a new wastewater treatment method to save the reproduction of the fish which is being affected by the human birth control pills which entered into the wastewater through their bodies. Focus is on the 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) which is a synthetic estrogen found in oral contraceptives. This is a substance which is being responsible for the cause of feminization problem in the male fish. The presence of this estrogenic contaminant is creating proteins among the male fish which help in the growth of eggs and they are not part of functions of a male fish.
If this contaminant remains in the water continuously, it will become the reason of the development of eggs in the testes of the male which will ultimately reduce the reproduction in the fish. This estrogenic contaminant is not only a threat for fish but also it can be harmful for human. When the water is used for the drinking purpose, and these products still remain the as a part of it, they can help in the sex transformation of males and can cause more issues related to the reproduction in human as well.
Measures to stop the reduction issue in reproduction of Fish
A solution has been framed for the removal of estrogenic contaminants from the wastewater in the shape of TAML activators. These are small molecules which have the similarity of behavior with the oxidizing enzymes. TAML which has the chemical formula H2O2 is expected to be a cure through which exploration can be done to remove the EE2 and more pharmaceutical drugs. H2O2 is a substance which is considered to be well-matched with the environment and the quality of such catalyst is that with one kilogram of quantity it has the capability of the treatment of large amount of water, may be tens of thousands of tonnes. The solution has been proposed by the research team helmed by Carnegie Mellon University Chemist Terrence Collins.
Water authorities have to face the problem of finding the contaminants in the drinking water as the treatment of wastewater which comes through the sewage system remains unsuccessful sometimes. The reason is that these chemical which are also called micro pollutants are unable to be broken down completely and they can pass through the treatment process of wastewater easily and produce bad consequences for the human health.
