One of the recent studies of Harvard University revealed that the consumption of water or other liquids by children and teens is not enough is America. This less usage of water can become a cause of lack of hydration among them due to which their physical and mental health can be affected badly. This less amount of water usage may not affect most of the children quickly rather it may cause problems internally which could lessen their lives and the quality of their lives. This is an issue which is not much focused by anyone and Erica Kenney who is a postdoctoral research fellow in social and behavioral sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health put this in front of us which could save our children’s health in future if attention is given to it. Hydration of the children is necessary so that certain body processes like circulation, metabolism, temperature regulation and water removal may work properly.
How much effective it can be?
Nancy Copperman, who directs public health initiatives, said that children have more chances to get attacked by such things as compared to the adults as children needs more time to adapt themselves to the heat. Physiological issues which can be caused due to weakened hydration level, heat stroke and increased demand on their kidneys. More problems which they have to face due to dehydration include headaches, irritability, poor circulation, reduced physical performance, and poorer mental functioning.
U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey which was done between the years 2009 and 2012 was the main source of data for the Harvard study which included over 4000 children and teens between the ages of 6 and 19.
The results of the study showed that there were more than half respondents who do not have enough hydration and a comparison was made among boys and girls according to which there were 76 percent more boys than the girls who are probably lacking the hydration. Researchers also found that 34 percent white children are consuming less amount of water in comparison with the blacks. Another surprising fact was that a quarter of the respondents do not consume plain water.
Causes of Lack of Water Consumption
Reasons of not taking much water were supposed and given by Dr. Ron Marino, associate chair of pediatrics at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. According to him, there might be a possibility that children do not have easy access to drinking water in their schools or they may not drink water intentionally so that they do not have to run to the bathrooms in the schools. Another cause for such less amount of consumption is that the increased number of juices and other drinks which are consumed more than the plain water. Therefore, food industry may be held responsible for it too.
We should try to overcome such issue to avoid any further problems regarding the health of the children. Children should be made aware of these problems and they must be helped to drink more water to be active and fit physically.
