WASHINGTON — Homeowners in rural Nebraska have a chance to access up to $11,000 through a federal loan program meant to improve access to clean, safe drinking water.

U.S. agriculture officials announced earlier this month that up to $993,000 would be awarded to nonprofit groups through a household water-well system grant program. The groups will use the money to offer low-interest loans to qualified homeowners.

Loans are capped at $11,000 and will carry a term of up to 20 years at a 1 percent annual interest rate.

Homeowners can use money to build or upgrade household water-well systems. Loans can't be used for home sewer or septic-system projects.

Applications are due May 31. For more information, visit www.rurdev.usda.gov
