U.S. Water News Online
CHICAGO -- In order to provide up-to-date information
on the impacts of erosion and flooding in shoreline areas of
the Great Lakes, a World Wide Web homepage has been
developed by the Great Lakes Storm Damage Reporting System
(GLSDRS). The Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for the home
pages of the GLSDRS and the Chicago District of the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers is http://www.usace.army.mil/ncc/.
A database of nearly 66,000 Great Lakes residents living in
riparian zones has been developed by the Chicago district,
which conducts a telephone survey of damages after each
storm event. Each survey respondent is asked to estimate
erosion, flooding, and property damages that may have
occurred during the storm. Information also is collected on
the extent of shoreline erosion and depth of flooding
experienced on each respondent's property. Currently, the
GLSDRS homepage contains 1995 damage reports and survey data
along with information on the telephone survey design.
