LOS ANGELES — The state attorney general's office has filed suit against gas station chain TravelCenters of America to force the company to comply with California's underground fuel storage laws.

Attorney General Jerry Brown said the company has “knowingly and repeatedly disregarded” the laws, putting groundwater supplies at risk of contamination.

The lawsuit was filed recently.

Brown says the Riverside Department of Environmental Health found long-standing violations after inspecting the company's Riverside County facility.

The Riverside County district attorney's office filed legal action in July 2008 seeking an injunction citing alleged violations such as failure to manage hazardous waste containers.
