Okla. A.G. seeks injunction over poultry waste

November 2007

U.S. Water News Online

TULSA, Okla. -- Attorney General Drew Edmondson is asking a federal judge to halt further land application of poultry waste in the 1 million-acre Illinois River Watershed, citing an "imminent and substantial endangerment of the public health."

The motion for the preliminary injunction maintains that unless the court grants the request by the spring, the fecal bacteria found in poultry waste could pose a health threat to the 155,000 people who recreate in the river valley annually.

The injunction request is part of Edmondson's ongoing lawsuit against 13 Arkansas-based poultry companies for polluting the Illinois River watershed with chicken litter.
