BALTIMORE -- A New Orleans-based ship operator was fined $1 million after it admitted four of its vessels illegally dumped untreated bilge waste off Maryland waters.

Pacific-Gulf Marine Inc. also was ordered to pay $500,000 for community service, half of which will fund water quality projects in the Chesapeake Bay, federal prosecutors said.

The ships had discharged the waste and falsified records to save money, prosecutors said.

A Coast Guard inspection discovered the misconduct, but prosecutors said the company launched an internal investigation and cooperated with federal authorities.
