PIERRE, S.D. -- The state has issued more shutoff orders to some water rights holders along the Cheyenne River and its tributaries from Angostura Dam to the Belle Fourche River.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources says the ongoing drought is to blame.
The new order expands one that was issued late last month to 31 junior water right holders along the same stretch. The new one will affect another 14 junior water right holders.
State water law says the two highest uses of water in streams and groundwater aquifers are domestic use followed by the uses of the most senior water right permit holders.
