Wind Cave water at issue

September 2007

U.S. Water News Online

HOT SPRINGS, S.D. -- Officials at Wind Cave are worried that a rural water project planned for the southern Black Hills could threaten the cave's underground lakes.

They're working with the U.S. Geological Service and water-project developers to find a solution.

The Southern Black Hills Water System plans to drill wells that would tap the Madison Aquifer near Wind Cave, which is north of Hot Springs.

Wind Cave officials say the wells could reduce the water level in the cave by as much as 70 feet and virtually dry up a series of underground lakes that are important to the cave's ecosystem.
