McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- Yamhill County produces world-class pinot noirs, but the beverage attracting attention recently is water -- and not just any old water.
For $45 you can buy a 24-bottle case of water the Torii Mor Winery says has been held in porous rock beneath the Red Hills of Dundee for millions of years. The water is advertised on the Dundee winery's Web site and sold from its tasting room.
The county land use panel has an upcoming hearing on a conditional use permit so the winery can continue selling the water.
The water source has not been designated a groundwater-limited area by the state. But nearby property owners say they are worried nevertheless that the groundwater could be depleted.
State officials say commercial use of water without a permit is limited to 5,000 gallons a day and the winery must take what is bottled into account as well as what is used in the vineyard.
