LINCOLN, Neb. -- State grants are available to Nebraska communities to close abandoned wells in populated areas.

The state Department of Environmental Quality has $75,000 to help cities and villages cap wells that pose a health risk. The funding will be distributed over the next two years.

Uncapped wells pose not only a physical threat, especially to children and animals, but provide a conduit to groundwater, creating a larger risk for contamination.

Communities are legally obligated to cap abandoned wells, and the grants will allow them to do it at no costs, said department spokesman Brian McManus.

The grant money can be used to match funds that the state's 23 natural resource districts provide to close abandoned wells.
