STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Lauded as "a standard bearer for all non-governmental
organizations in the water and sanitation sector," WaterAid, a British
international relief program, has been selected to receive the Stockholm
Water Prize for 1995. To be awarded during the Stockholm Water Festival next
month, the $150,000 prize is given annually to an individual or organization
in recognition of outstanding contributions in the field of water
conservation.

Calling WaterAid the "standard bearer" for non-governmental water supply and
sanitation efforts, Alf Goran, chairman of the Stockholm Water Prize
Nominating Committee, noted that the British program provides low-cost
programs for water supply sustainability among some of the world's poorest
people. WaterAid was established in 1981 following a conference entitled
"Thirsty Third World," which took place in London.
