AMMAN, Jordan -- Potential German aid for Mideast water
projects amounting to $400 million is being sought by Israel
and Jordan, according to a Reuters news report. An aid
package reportedly being negotiated by Israeli Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres and Jordan's Crown Prince Hassan was
described as involving "water storage systems, desalination,
and conveyance ... to key population centers."
Construction of dams on the Jordan and Yarmuk rivers is part
of an effort by Jordan to increase its water supplies and to
make peace with Israel. Germany has been instrumental in the
past in developing Jordan's water supply and irrigation
systems. A united Germany has provided aid for building
canals in the Jordan Valley where most of the Mideast
nation's food is produced. Peres and Prince Hassan, after
meeting with German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, "will put the
final touches to the plan, its cost, and engineering terms
of references before giving it to the Germans," a Jordanian
official told Reuters.
