WATSONVILLE, Calif. — Water rates have gone up here in Watsonville as part of the city's effort to encourage conservation.

The 2.9 percent hike has gone into effect. Rates go from an average $19.63 a month to $20.15 per month.

Residents using more than the average household will see rates climb higher in April as part of a new three-tier rate structure approved by the City Council. The city currently has a two-tier system.

Under the plan, Tier 1 customers using up to 900 cubic feet of water pay $1.05 per cubic foot; Tier 2 up to 2,000 cubic feet pay $1.65 per cubic foot; and Tier 3 for those using more than 2,000 cubic feet pay $2.33.
