SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Lack of rain in San Luis Obispo County has communities urging residents to reduce water use and has raised the possibility of stricter measures.

Mandatory conservation could be adopted in Nipomo in the coming months.

Two weeks ago, Grover Beach declared a water shortage and urged conservation because rainfall totals were 20 percent below last year's total.

City officials in Morro Bay, Atascadero and Paso Robles have also requested residents to conserve water.

John Neil, general manager of Atascadero's Mutual Water Co., said that city's total use of water jumped this year to 2.25 billion gallons from 1.99 billion gallons.

Cities are also asking residents to use drought-tolerant landscapes and cut back on irrigation.
