SAN DIEGO -- Trends in water conservation have a way of
moving
through the various rooms and living areas of a typical home. In the
past,
water-saving programs have centered around the kitchen, bathroom, and
lawn
. Now, conservation efforts are targeting the laundry room.
In a joint program, the San Diego County Water Authority has
teamed up with
San Diego Gas & Electric to offer a $100 financial incentive for
consumer
purchase and installation of approved horizontal-axis clothes
washing
machines. Such machines, which load in the front rather than on top,
are
common in Europe and actually once were popular in the U.S. as well.
Rather
than agitating clothes, these horizontal-axis units tumble their
loads in a
manner similar to clothes dryers.
The movement of a rotating cylinder uses significantly less water
than
tub-type agitating machines, while also requiring reduced amounts of
laundry
detergent.
