DENVER -- No longer the nation's dam building agency, the
U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is fulfilling its new function of promoting efficiency in
water resources management by sponsoring a water conservation awards program.
The bureau's 1995 Leadership in Water Conservation Awards will recognize
water-saving efforts in the 17 western states.

"Reclamation's number-one priority is to implement water conservation and
efficiency improvements," noted Commissioner Dan Beard in announcing the
awards program. "Our goal is to foster further improvement in efficient use
and management of water supplies," Beard added. A key to achieving the
effort, he added, "is recognizing those agencies and individuals who are
making innovative choices in water conservation today."

Nominations are sought from individuals, groups, private corporations,
product manufacturers, local municipalities, regional governing bodies, and
federal agencies throughout the U.S. The contest will be conducted within
five categories: promising product, educational mentor, innovative
partnership in conservation, small demonstration project, and long-term
leader. A superior achievement award will also be given to the most
outstanding nomination from among all entries.

Additional information and nomination forms are available from Theresa Taylor
