ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- Over the next four years, the U.S.
Bureau of Reclamation
will provide some $17.5 million for a project that will ultimately
provide
approximately 12,800 feet of reclaimed water annually for the city
of
Escondido, resulting in a lower overall demand for imported water to
San
Diego County.
The federal funds will be used to help the city upgrade its
existing water
reclamation plant and to design a system to distribute reclaimed
water to
surrounding communities.
"As a water management agency, Reclamation supports wastewater
reuse projects
through a grant program that offers strong financial support, yet
minimizes
federal involvement in locally sponsored projects," said Tim Ulrich
of the
Bureau. Since 1994, noted Ulrich, the Bureau has signed nine grant
agreements
for reuse projects with a total value of more than $100 million.
"This
project will help the city of Escondido fully use its existing
water
resources to maintain a dependable water supply," he added.
