ALBUQUERQUE -- Mayor Martin Chavez has issued a challenge to the city's neighborhood associations.
The mayor's neighborhood challenge is a contest to see which neighborhood can conserve the most. A separate competition will determine which neighborhood can convert the most property to xeriscape.
The winner in each category will get $10,000 in neighborhood improvements, which could mean something like a new park or a community center.
``This is an opportunity for neighborhood associations to participate in water conservation and win some big bucks,'' Chavez said.
Both contests run from May through October and are open to all neighborhood associations.
Sandra P. Richardson, president of the Cherry Hills Civic Association, said her neighborhood will be in the running. She added that winning won't be everything.
``We're all winners when we save water,'' she said.
