EL MONTE, Calif. -- For a limited time, the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District will offer rebates toward the purchase of water- and energy-saving clothes washing machines. The Residential High Efficiency Clothes Washer (HECW) Rebate Program is being conducted by the Upper District in partnership with: the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, State Department of Water Resources, CalFed and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

The HECW Rebate Program will offer an extraordinary rebate of $350 toward the purchase of a qualifying HECW model. The list of qualifying HECW models is available on the Upper District website (www.usgvmwd.org) or can be obtained by calling (626) 443-2297. There are a limited number of rebates available, officials said, that will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

The efficient clothes washers meet the Consortium for Energy Efficiency⤙s (CEE) specifications, typically using up to 50 percent less water and 50 percent less energy compared to standard-efficiency washers. An HECW is projected to have an annual savings of approximately 7,000 gallons of water, 213kWh and 16 therms of gas when used with a gas water heater and an electric dryer. The total water savings expected for this project is estimated to be 149 acre feet or over 48.5 million gallons of water over a fifteen-year product lifespan.

To ensure eligibility and to obtain a rebate application, interested residents must contact the Upper District BEFORE purchasing a washer, district officials said. Program details and be viewed at the Upper District w ebsite at www.usgvmwd.org.
